When attempting to convert a Quicken file to QuickBooks, the following error displays:

      Cannot open Quicken file
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1:  Check Quicken file names:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Close Quicken.
  3. Check the Quicken file name for any Special Characters or Numbers (&, -, #, _, %,(,)).
  4. If you have Special Characters or Numbers in the file name and you have Quicken installed, please follow these steps to rename the file.
  5. If you do not have Quicken installed, rename the file without any spaces, special characters or numbers, (ex: Test.qdf).
  6. Try to convert the file within QuickBooks by going to File > Utilities > Convert > From Quicken.

Solution 2:  Validate file

  1. Validate your Quicken data file.
  2. Try to convert the file to QuickBooks again. (File > Utilities > Convert > From Quicken).

Solution 3:  Super Validation Process

  1. Return to Quicken and ensure that it is at the latest release (Online menu > One Step Update).
  2. Open the file that you are attempting to convert.
  3. Perform a super validate on the Quicken file.
    1. Press and hold Ctrl+Shift on the keyboard throughout this entire procedure
    2. From the Quicken File menu, choose File Operations > Validate
    3. Select the file to validate from the Validate Quicken File window
    4. Select the option for Super Validate File
    5. A progress indicator appears, with the message Super Validating File
    6. Ctrl+Shift can be released once the super validating begins
  4. Create a copy of the Quicken file (File > File Operations > Copy)
  5. Put the copy of the Quicken file on a local drive
  6. Ensure that QuickBooks is at the latest release
  7. Attempt to convert the copy of the Quicken file to QuickBooks again (File > Utilities > Convert > From Quicken...)
