Error: QuickBooks can't start because it is already running

When you restart your computer or open QuickBooks 2011 or later you see one of the following messages:

  • QuickBooks can't start because it is already running. Only QuickBooks Accountant and QuickBooks Enterprise can open more than one company file.
  • Problem: QuickBooks could not be started because it is already running the maximum number of instances.
  • An empty QuickBooks window already exists, so QuickBooks will use that window.

QuickBooks Quick Startup is a feature that enables QuickBooks 2011 or later to load your company file faster by leaving the QuickBooks application process (QBW32.exe) running in the background.

How to fix it

This issue has been resolved in the latest release for QuickBooks 2012.

  1. Important: Be sure to select what version of QuickBooks you use when you use the update page.
  2. Reboot your computer.
  3. Open QuickBooks as administrator.
    1. Close QuickBooks.
    2. Right click the QuickBooks icon and select Run as administrator (Windows XP users will see an option of Run as....).
    3. Enter your administrator login credentials
