Home Page appears blank or QuickBooks error in QuickBooks 2008 and later

When you open QuickBooks 2008 or later, you may experience one of the following:

  • QuickBooks error: QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
  • The Home Page appears blank or icons may be missing.
Why this is happening

QuickBooks is configured to download minor updates automatically from the Intuit Server. We call these "background" updates. The June 21st update is causing this issue.

Until a full resolution is available (and will be automatically received by your product), follow the interim solution below.

How to fix it

Solution 1: Update QuickBooks

Estimated time: 5 minutes

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. From the Help menu select Update QuickBooks.
  3. Click the Update Now tab
  4. Remove the check mark to the left of Maintenance Releases and click the Get Updates button
  5. When the text below the Get Updates button says Update Complete, click the OK button and close QuickBooks.
  6. Open QuickBooks and verify that the Home Page icons are back

If you still do not have icons on your home page, try solution 2.

Solution 2: Download a file to automatically rename two QuickBooks program files
Estimated time: 1 minute

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the homepagefix.bat file and save it to your desktop.
  3. Windows 7/Vista: Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
    Windows XP:
    Double-click the file.
  4. After the program has completed, reopen QuickBooks.

If you have trouble downloading or running the file, follow the steps in solution 3 to manually locate and rename the files.
