Error: Restore failed, while restoring a backup from QuickBooks 2010 or later to an earlier version

The following error occurs after converting to QuickBooks 2010 or later fails and you attempt to restore the backup created during the conversion to the previous version you had installed:

Restore failed

Why this is happening
  • QuickBooks uses better compression in QuickBooks 2010 to back up and restore your company file. A special backup must be made from QuickBooks 2010 or later version to restore in your prior version.
  • You are trying to restore a backup file into a version of QuickBooks that is incompatible with the program that created it.
Example: backup was created in the Canadian version of QuickBooks.

How to fix it

When restoring a backup from a QuickBooks 2010 or later conversion, use one of the following options to restore your backup to a previous version:

Solution 1: Verify the program they are restoring into is compatible with the program the backup file was created in

  1. Go to the Control Panel
    • For Windows 7 or Vista:
      1. On your keyboard, press Windows + E to open the Computer window.
        Note
: In Windows 8, click Computer at the top of the window.
      2. Click Uninstall or change a Programs.
      3. Look at the description of the QuickBooks program and verify it is not, for example, the QuickBooks Canada edition.
    • For Windows XP:
      1. Click on Start and go to the Control Panel.
      2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs link.
      3. Look at the description of the QuickBooks program and verify it is not, for example, the QuickBooks Canada edition.

  2. If the incorrect version of QuickBooks is installed, it will need to be uninstalled and the correct version installed to be able to restore the backup file.
Note: You may need to do a Clean Reinstall of QuickBooks.

Solution 2: Use the conversion tool located inside QuickBooks 2010 or later

  1. Open the Restore Backup window:

    • QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions: Choose File > Utilities > Restore Backup For Earlier QuickBooks Version.
    • QuickBooks Simple Start: Choose File > Maintenance > Restore Backup For Earlier QuickBooks Version.

  2. Click the browse button to the right of Backup filename to select the file, and then click Open.
  3. Click the browse button to the right of Restored filename and select the location you want to to restore the file to.
  4. In the Filename field, enter a new file name, giving it a .qbw extension.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Click OK.
  7. A QuickBooks Information window appears, confirming the company file has been restored to the location you selected.
  8. You can now open the file in the previous version.

Solution 3: Download the standalone Conversion Tool
Important: This tool is not for converting QuickBooks 2010 or later files to a prior version. It should be used only to restore the backup created while upgrading the company file. Once the file is upgraded you will not be able to open it in a prior version of QuickBooks.

Download the tool.

Note: The Conversion Tool works only for QuickBooks 2007, 2008, and 2009. Earlier versions must use the conversion tool in QuickBooks 2010 or later.
