When installing or updating QuickBooks, the following error occurs when installing QuickBooks:
[Error 1304] Error writing to file [file name]. Verify that you have access to that directory.
Why this is happening
This error can be caused by an issue with the CD or the CD drive. It may also be caused by a damaged .NET component.
How to fix it
Important: These troubleshooting steps may help resolve your issue. They focus on the Windows operating system, which is not an Intuit product. Intuit recommends if you are not comfortable doing these steps on your own, you can find expert assistance by consulting your computer's manufacturer or a Windows expert. If the difficulty persists after performing these steps, contact your computer's manufacturer or Microsoft.
If you prefer to resolve this issue manually, copy the installation folders from the QuickBooks CD to your hard drive and then install QuickBooks, as described here.
Note: If you downloaded QuickBooks and are not installing from a CD, see repairing/reinstalling the Microsoft .NET Framework component of Windows.
Solution 2: Copy the installation files from the CD to the hard drive
- Insert the QuickBooks CD into the CD drive. If the installation starts automatically, click Quit.
- Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Open Windows Explorer (Windows 7) or Explore (Windows Vista or XP).
- Before copying the installation files, create a new folder in a convenient location (for example, on the desktop) on the hard drive to which you will copy the installation files:
- Select Desktop in the left pane of the open window.
- Windows 7 & 8: Click Organize, and then in the menu bar click New Folder.
- Windows Vista: Click the Organize drop-down arrow and choose New Folder.
- Windows XP: Choose File > New > Folder.
- When the new folder appears in the right pane, enter QuickBooks as the name for that folder.
- In the left pane, browse to and right-click the QuickBooks CD and choose Explore.
- In the right pane, locate the QBooks and ThirdParty folders, and the setup.exe file.
- Press and hold the Ctrl key and select both folders and the file.
- Right-click one of the highlighted folders and choose Copy.
- Browse back to the QuickBooks folder you created previously.
- Right-click that folder and choose Paste. (It may take a few minutes to copy these folders from your CD to your hard drive.)
Note: If you receive an error while copying these files, there may be an issue with your CD drive or the CD itself. Try Installing QuickBooks on connected computers from one CD drive.
