Error 15240: The update did not complete successfully or the file you specified cannot be opened

The following errors occurs when updating QuickBooks:

  • Error 15240: The payroll update did not complete successfully
  • File Exists:  The file you specified cannot be opened.  Make sure that it is not being used by another program.
What you can try now

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

QuickBooks 2013 and later

 

Workaround 2: Ensure Windows permissions are set correctly for QuickBooks to function 

Workaround 3: Make sure SSL 2 is checked in Internet Options

Workaround 4: Reinstall using a clean install

QuickBooks 2012 and earlier (If above steps do not resolve the issue, please try the following options)

This issue has been resolved in the latest release for QuickBooks 2014.

Update to the latest release:
Estimated time: 30 minutes

Go to the Update to the Latest Release web page.

IMPORTANT:  Make sure your product is selected.  If not, click "Choose a different product."

Select and follow the instructions for one of the update options:

  • Automatic Updates
  • Manual Updates
