Error 15203: The QuickBooks update did not complete successfully

When trying to update QuickBooks, you see the error:


Error 15203: The QuickBooks update did not complete successfully.

Why this is happening

One possible cause of this error is that your computer's date is incorrect. It might also be caused by having more than one installation of QuickBooks of the same version installed.


Note: QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions and the QuickBooks Database Server Manager can be installed simultaneously with another version of QuickBooks of the same year. However, more than one installation of QuickBooks Premier, Pro, and/or Simple Start (for example, QuickBooks Pro 2009 and QuickBooks Premier 2009) on the same computer will cause issues.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends 3 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all 3 to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Verify that your system date and time are correct

  1. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Date and Time.
  3. Correct the date and/or time if necessary.
  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Download the update again.

Solution 2: If you have 2 or more computers networked together and QuickBooks installed

When QuickBooks is installed on more than one computer on your network, the updates can be shared. This is a good alternative if you want to save the more time-consuming solutions for when you have more time.

  1. Turn on Shared Download in QuickBooks on both computers.
    1. Choose Help > Update QuickBooks.
    2. Click the Options tab.
    3. In the Shared Download section, select Yes.
    4. Click the Close button.
  2. Download the update again on the computer that works.
  3. Close QuickBooks on the computer that doesn't work.
  4. Restart that computer and open QuickBooks.

Solution 3: If you have more than one version of QuickBooks of the same year installed

  1. Uninstall one of the QuickBooks installations (for example, if QuickBooks Premier 2009 and Pro 2009 are installed, uninstall QuickBooks Pro 2009)
  2. Repair the remaining version of QuickBooks.
  3. Download and install the update again.
