Error QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close when double-clicking a file to open it

When double-clicking a QuickBooks 2006 through 2008 company file to open it, an error occurs:

QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Or when double-clicking a QuickBooks 2006 through 2008 company file, the mouse pointer changes to an hourglass momentarily, and then nothing happens.

Why this is happening

This can occur when you double-click a QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2006 through 2008 company file or a QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 6.0 through 8.0 company file and you have QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2009 or Enterprise Solutions 9.0 software installed on the computer.

How to fix it

This issue has been resolved in the latest release for QuickBooks 2009 and Enterprise 9.0. Please update your program to the most current release.

To resolve this issue manually, use the QuickBooks program to open the company file:

  1. Open the older version of QuickBooks.
  2. Open the company file:
    • QuickBooks2007/7.0 and 2008/8.0:
      1. Select the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
      2. Select Open a company file and click Next.
      3. Browse to the location of the company file, select it, and click Open.
    • QuickBooks 2006/6.0:
      1. Click the File menu and select Open Company.
      2. Browse to the location of the company file, select it, and click Open.
If this solution does not resolve the issue, you can read discussions and post messages and questions relating to your issue on the Intuit QuickBooks Community site for free or you can contact a technical support agent for additional guidance. Fees may apply.
