Unrecoverable Error XXXXX XXXXX QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close

When you try to open QuickBooks (including the QuickBooks Database Server Manager) you see this error message:

Unrecoverable Error XXXXX XXXXX QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Note: This error can also occur when you try to create a new company using the Easy Step Interview.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends several solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Reboot and check UAC

Try rebooting your computer and ensure User Account Control (UAC) is on (only for Windows Vista or later).

Solution 2: Open a QuickBooks Sample Company file

Opening a sample company file helps to identify the source of the problem. Typically if a Sample File or New File opens without error, the problem may be related to the company file. If Sample Files/New Files also produce an error, then it is more likely to be a problem with the QuickBooks program or your operating system.

  1. Once you are at the "No Company Open screen", click the Open a sample file button, and choose any of the company files in the list.
Note: You may be asked to restore and update the file. Click Yes.

If these solutions do not resolve the issue, you can read discussions and post messages and questions relating to your issue on the Intuit QuickBooks Community site for free, or you can contact a technical support agent for additional guidance. Fees may apply.
