Error: Adaptive server anywhere database engine has encountered a problem and needs to close

When you open QuickBooks Desktop, you see this error message:

Adaptive server anywhere database engine has encountered a problem and needs to close.

The error can also occur when trying to access a customer, vendor, or employee center in a QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Why this is happening

This error can be caused by one of the following conditions:

  • The QuickBooks Desktop company file is damaged.
  • The program was not correctly installed.
  • The program became corrupted after installation. In some cases this might be caused by a virus on the affected system.
  • The company file was copied to a flash drive and the drive was removed without closing QuickBooks Desktop.

If you are using a flash or thumb drive, always close QuickBooks Desktop before removing the drive.

How to fix it

To resolve this issue, select the option that best fits your situation:

If the error occurs while opening the Customer, Vendor, or Employee Center
  1. Troubleshoot for data damage.
  2. If the error persists, you may need to restore the company file from a backup.

If the error occurs while opening QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Scan the affected computer using anti-virus software with current virus definition files. If you need assistance, please consult  your system or network administrator, your antivirus software vendor or their Web site, or a local computer consultant.
  2. Uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.
