When you try to open a company file, you see:

QuickBooks was unable to open the company file.

followed by one of the following error codes:

  • (-6190, -83)

Why this is happening

This error can occur if more than one computer is set to host the company file.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Download, install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor

Solution 2: Manually resolve errors: -6189, -83 or -6190, -83

  1. Verify hosting by opening QuickBooks on each computer and pressing F2 to open the Product Information window:
    • Server (Hosting Computer):
      1. Check the Local Server Information in the lower left corner of the window to verify that Hosting is set to local files only or local and remote files.
      2. If Hosting is set to Off, choose File > Utilities > Host Multi-User Access and follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: If you have installed the QuickBooks Database Server Manager only go to step 2.

    • Client computers (Workstations):
      1. For each computer, check the Local Server Information section in the lower left corner of the window to verify that Hosting is set to Off.
      2. If Hosting is set to anything other than Off, choose File > Utilities > Stop Hosting Multi-User Access and follow the on-screen prompts.
  2. Open the QuickBooks Database Server Manager and scan folders. This creates the *.nd file that allows multi-user access.

If these solutions don't resolve the issue, you can read discussions and post messages and questions relating to your issue on the Intuit QuickBooks Community site for free. You can contact an agent for additional guidance. Fees may apply.
