QuickBooks does not start

When clicking on the QuickBooks or company file icon to start the program it does not start at all or only partially appears.

Why this is happening

A number of issues can prevent QuickBooks from opening. In some cases, rebooting your computer will resolve this issue.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends 7 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all 7 to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Restart your computer

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Open QuickBooks.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 2.

Solution 2: Open QuickBooks using shortcut commands

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose All Programs > QuickBooks.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks shortcut, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click Open.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 3.

Solution 3: Close the QBW32.exe process  from Windows Task Manager

  1. Right-click the Windows taskbar and choose Task Manager.
  2. Click the Processes tab.
  3. If QBW32.EXE is listed, click once to select it, click the End Process button, and then click Yes in the confirmation message.
  4. Close Task Manager.
  5. Right-click your QuickBooks desktop shortcut and choose Open.
Note: Opening QuickBooks multiple times (double-clicking repeatedly) can prevent it from opening successfully. Be sure to allow sufficient time for QuickBooks to load before continuing.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 4.

Solution 4: Sign in as Windows Administrator

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Use the Admin user name and password to sign in.
  3. Open QuickBooks.
  4. If successful, create a new Admin user or Power User.
  5. If the new user can open QuickBooks, continue working as that user.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 5.

Solution 5: Configure your firewall

If you have firewall software installed on the computer that is experiencing this problem, be sure that QuickBooks has been granted full access through the firewall. For more information refer to Firewall and Internet security for updates and network access.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 6.

Solution 6: Re-register QuickBooks in Windows

  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Run reboot.bat.
  3. Try to open QuickBooks.

If you still experience the problem, go to solution 7.

Solution 7: Reinstall QuickBooks in a new folder

Reinstall QuickBooks to a new folder.

If the problem still occurs, see the article You see, Opening QuickBooks, and it flashes and goes away but QuickBooks won't open for further troubleshooting steps.
