Errors: X field records could not be read

Logging into the file, viewing or editing a sales form, or running the file utilities, QuickBooks displays one of the following errors:

  • # of fields could not be read.
  • C=291
  • [#] of field record(s) could not be read. This may be because the template type used to store this template is different from the template type being used to read it.

Why this is happening

These errors occur if one or more templates, such as invoices and sales orders, are damaged.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Update to the latest release

Update your installation of QuickBooks to the latest release.

Solution 2: Edit and update your templates
Important: These steps are for each affected template.

  1. Select the Lists menu and select Templates.
  2. Click the Include inactive checkbox. If Include inactive is not accessible, you can proceed to the next step.
  3. Click to select the first template in the list, and then click the Open Form button. If the form opens without error, close the template and move to the next template.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each template in the list.
  5. When the error occurs, close the form.
  6. In the Templates window, select the template that generated the error:
  7. Click the Templates button, select Edit Template, and then click the Additional Customization button in the Basic Customization window..
  8. Click the Default button.
  9. When prompted to continue, click OK. If this is a customized template, you will need to customize the template again after completing these steps.
  10. Click OK to save the changes.

Note: When defaulting customized templates, if the message "order cannot be zero displays, you need to send your company file to Data Services for recovery. Or you could restore a recent backup that is not not damaged and reenter data.

Solution 3: Change the current logo or add a new logo to the damaged templates

  1. Go to Lists > Templates.
  2. Double-click each template in the list till you receive the error message.
  3. Hit OK on the error message till you get to the Basic Customization screen.
  4. Make sure the Use Logo box is checked, then click the button Select Logo.
  5. Select any valid image file and hit Open.
  6. QuickBooks will add the image file to the template.
  7. Hit OK to exit the Basic Customization window.
  8. Double-click that same template and make sure there are no errors.
  9. Continue adding images to all of the templates that are giving errors, then make sure the errors have stopped.
