Error: Runtime Error! When opening QuickBooks
The following error occurs when trying to launch QuickBooks
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Programs Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\qbw32.exe
How to fix it
Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.
Launch QuickBooks with no data file
- Open theTask Manager
- Press CTRL + ALT + DEL on the keyboard
- Select the option to Start Task Manager
- Ensure QBW.EXE is not running
- Scroll down the list and look for QBW32.EXE
- If it IS listed there:
- Highlight it
- Click the End Process button
- Right-Click on the QuickBooks Icon
- Press and hold the CTRL key on the keyboard
- Select Open
- If the No Company Open Screen opens, release the CTRL key
- Open the data file
- If the error occurs after that, proceed to the next solution
Suppress open windows in the data file
- Repeat steps in 1-6 in Solution 2
- From the No Company Open Screen, press and hold the ALT key on the keyboard
- While continuing to hold the ALT key on the keyboard, Open the data file (this opens the file, but keeps all windows in the file closed)
Rename the QBW.INI
- Navigate to the QBW.INI file
- Windows Vista/7/8 - C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR
- Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR
- Right-Click on the QBW.INI and select rename
- Change the name to QBW.OLD
- Press the Enter key on the keyboard to ensure the change is saved
- Open QuickBooks normally
Rename the QBWUSER.INI
- Navigate to the QBWUSER.INI File
- Windows Vista/7/8 - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR
- Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR
- Right-Click on the QBWUSER.INI and select rename
- Change the name to QBWUSER.OLD
- Press the Enter key on the keyboard to ensure the change is saved
- Open QuickBooks normally
