Accounts on reports are in alphabetical order and not by account number

The Chart of Accounts is sorted by account number but the account order on reports are still showing up in Alphabetical Order.

Detailed information

QuickBooks 2008 and newer: The reports should match the Chart of Accounts. If the Chart of Accounts is sorted by something other than account number (sort by number is the default setting):

  1. Go to Lists > Chart of Accounts.
  2. Go to Column Headers shown at the top of the Chart of Accounts click on the diamond icon to the far left. (If the diamond is not visible, the Chart of Accounts is already sorted by number.)

QuickBooks 2007 and previous: The program is functioning as designed.

  • Export to Microsoft Excel and edit the report
  • Use Financial Statement Designer to change the report

If the Chart of Accounts is already sorted by account number but your report is not, resort the Chart of Accounts:

  1. Go to Lists > Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click on the Account button at the bottom left of the list.
  3. Select Re-sort List.
  4. Review the Warning Message about returning the list to its original order (this only affects you if you have manually moved individual accounts in the list by dragging them to a new location).
  5. Click OK.
  6. Close and re-open your report.
