System requirements for QuickBooks 2010 and Enterprise Solutions 10

Note: QuickBooks has not been tested with Internet Explorer 9. In some cases, it may be necessary to revert to Internet Explorer 8 to ensure the best possible performance with QuickBooks.

System requirements for QuickBooks 2010 include the following:

 

Operating systems supported

To run QuickBooks 2010 or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 10:

  • Windows 7, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed 
  • Windows Vista, all editions including 64-bit if SP2 or later installed, or Windows Vista with UAC, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed 
  • Windows XP (SP2 or later strongly recommended), all editions including 64-bit if SP2 or later installed, natively installed 
  • Windows Server 2003 or 2008 Standard, Small Business and Enterprise editions including 64-bit, natively installed 

For database servers:

  • Windows: Natively installed Windows 7, Vista, XP Professional; Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

    Note: Windows Home Server Edition is not supported.
     
  • Linux: The following natively installed versions are supported when using an Enterprise Solutions database server only installation.
    • Red Hat Fedora Core 11.0
    • OpenSUSE 11.0
    • Fedora 6, 7, 8, 10.1
    • CentOS 5
    • Debian (Lenny)
    • Mandriva
    • Ubuntu 6.06, 7.04, 7.10, 8.04

For file servers:

Novell Netware server or Linux / Samba file servers can be used with advanced configuration. Performance will be impacted on networks running less than 100 Mbps.

Windows 7, Vista, or XP: QuickBooks Simple Start, Pro, Premier minimum requirements (client and server)

  • At least 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor; 2.4 GHz recommended.
  • At least 512 MB RAM for a single user; 1 GB recommended.
  • At least 1 GB of RAM for multiple, concurrent users.
  • 1.5 GB of disk space (additional space required for data files).
  • 4x CD-ROM drive required for CD installs.
  • Display optimized for 1024 x 768 screen resolution or higher. 1024 x 768 screen resolution or higher is required.
  • U.S. version of Windows only.
  • Regional Settings are supported when set to English (United States) with keyboard setting to US only.
  • Natively installed 
  • Disk space requirements for additional software:
    • 232 MB for Microsoft .NET 3.5 Runtime, provided on the QuickBooks CD.
    • Google Desktop Search (in-product search) space requirements are determined by the size of the company file and the nature of use. It is not unusual for indices to be as large as 1 GB.
       

Windows XP: QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions minimum requirements (client and server)

  • At least 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor.
  • At least 512 MB RAM for a client.
  • 1 GB RAM or more strongly recommended for a server.
  • 1.5 GB of disk space (additional space required for data files).

RAM requirements for Microsoft Terminal Services

Important: Terminal services is only supported with QuickBooks Enterprise.

  • 5 users: 2-3 GB
  • 10 users: 3-4 GB
  • 15 users: 4-6 GB
  • 20 users: 6-8 GB

Note: Depending on things such as your computer and network setup, QuickBooks data file size, network speed, and other variables, you may require more than the minimum stated in this article in order for QuickBooks to run smoothly. If you encounter problems, particularly slowness, when using QuickBooks, please speak with an IT professional to see if there is anything else that can be done with your computer environment to improve performance.

Software compatibility

QuickBooks is capable of integrating with hundreds of third-party applications. In addition to the following standard integrations provided with QuickBooks (additional RAM will enhance the use of these features), see QuickBooks Solutions Marketplace for the most up-to-date list:

QuickBooks 2010 and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 10 are compatible with:

  • Microsoft Office
    • Preparing letters requires Microsoft Word 2002, 2003 or 2007.
    • Exporting reports requires Microsoft Excel 2002, 2003 or 2007.
    • Contact Synchronization with Microsoft Outlook requires Outlook 2002, 2003, or 2007.
    • Synchronization with Outlook requires QuickBooks Contact Sync for Outlook (the download is available at no charge).

      Note: Contact Sync does not work with the Microsoft Business Contact Manager Outlook plug-in. If a sync is performed, duplicate records could result.

  • QuickBooks Customer Manager v2.0 and later.
  • QuickBooks Client Manager v2.0 and later.
  • QuickBooks Point of Sale v4.0 and later.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Business Planner functionality, viewing forms, and emailing forms requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later.
  • Payroll and other online features and services: Requires Internet access with at least a 56 Kbps connection speed (DSL or cable modem recommended).

Firewall and antivirus software compatibility

QuickBooks 2010 has been tested with the following firewall and antivirus products. In some cases, it may be necessary to adjust settings in these products to ensure the best possible performance with QuickBooks.

  • Windows 7 Firewall (all editions)
  • Windows Vista Firewall (all editions)
  • Windows XP Firewall (all editions)
  • Symantec Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security, Norton 360
  • McAfee VirusScan Plus, Internet Security, Total Protection
  • Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security
  • ZoneAlarm

Note: QuickBooks will work with systems running RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) but it is not recommended due to performance issues resulting in QuickBooks operating slowly.
