File extensions used in QuickBooks for Windows

QuickBooks Working Files

  • *.QBW - QuickBooks for Windows data file (all versions)
  • *.QBB - QuickBooks for Windows backup file (all versions)
  • *.QBM - QuickBooks portable file (QuickBooks 2006 and later)
  • *.QBI - Image file, "holds" transactions that have been written until they are posted to the hard drive (all versions)
  • *.QBR - Report template, exported from your memorized report list or downloaded from the web.
  • *.CNT - Help file used in QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later
  • *.DES - Layout designer template export file (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
  • *.v30 - QuickBooks v 3.0 backup file created when user of QuickBooks for Windows 3.0 upgrades to a later version. This file may be copied or renamed with extension "QBB" to be restored into the user's current version of QuickBooks.
Accountant Files

  • *.AIF - Accountant's copy Import File. Created when Accountant's copy is exported; to be used for importing into user's company file (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and 2006)
  • *.QBA - File used by accountant's review (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
  • *.QBA.TLG - Transaction log file for the Accountant's copy.
  • *.QBX - Backup made for Accountant's copy of user's company file. When Accountant restores this, it is an Accountant's Copy of the file. (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
  • *.QBY - Accountant's copy import file (QuickBooks 2007 and later)
Payroll Files

  • *.1PA - Files used to create forms 940 and 941 (Quickbooks for Windows 4.0 through QuickBooks 2004)
  • *.QPD - QuickPay data file, created by QuickPay version 3.0.
  • *.TXT & *.SET - QuickPay data files used in QuickPay version 2.0/2.1
  • Prddesvr.exe, Product.fam, Perwin95.ini, Perrval.dll - These files are used for printing 940/941 forms.
  • Taxtbl.usa - integrated payroll tax table file (QuickBooks for Windows v 3.1 and up)
  • Qpconvrt.log - file is created/updated when a user upgrades to integrated payroll from QuickBooks with QuickPay. Contains any informational/warning messages logged during conversion. (QuickBooks for Windows v 3.1 and up)
Utility & Log Files

  • *.AVI - Movie files used for "Show Me" (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
  • *.IIF -Intuit Interchange Format file. May be created for importing lists and/or transactions (all versions)
  • *.ND - QuickBooks Network Data File (QuickBooks 2006 and later)
  • *.RTP - Used for auto-patch (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
  • *.TLG - Transaction log file. Keeps track of changes to the file since the last backup. (QuickBooks 2006 and later)
  • *.WAV - Sound Advice files (used in CD versions of QuickBooks)
  • Qbwin.log - file is created/updated when a user runs verify and/or rebuild. Logs problems found/situations corrected (all versions)
  • Temp1234.qbt - file created during pass 1 of rebuild, and deleted automatically when rebuild is completed. (All versions)
Loan Manager Filers

  • *.LMR - Loan Manager
  • *.LMX - Loan Manager
Pro Timer Files

  • *.BDB - Timer backup file. (These files are used in QBW 5.0 and later if Timer is installed)
  • *.LDB - A Microsoft Access file needed for the *.TDB file.
  • *.TDB - Timer files. By default found in the QBTIMER directory (QuickBooks for Windows 5.0 and later)
