Edit the list of company files in the No Company Open window or Open Previous Company menu

You may change the list of company files in the No Company Open window or the Open Previous Company menu.
Detailed Instructions

Intuit recommends 2 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try both to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Open the files in the order you prefer.

Company files appear in the list with the most recently opened first. To move a company file to the top of the list, simply open it in QuickBooks.

  1. Open the window to browse for a company file:
    • QuickBooks 2007 and later:
      1. Choose File> Open or Restore Company.
      2. Select Open a company file, and click Next.
    • QuickBooks 2006 and earlier: Choose File > Open Company.
  2. Browse to the last company file you want to appear in the list, select it, and click Open.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the next-to-last company file you want to appear in the list, and so on, until the list appears in the order you want it.

Solution 2: Edit the list manually.

QuickBooks Pro Plus, QuickBooks Premier Plus, and QuickBooks Accountant Plus 2011 R7 and newer versions allow the list to be edited in QuickBooks.

Note: If you do not see the Edit List link and you are in one of the products listed above, click here for instructions on how to rename the entitlement data store file.

  1. Open the No Company Open window.
  2. Click the Edit List button.

  3. Place a check mark next to the company files you want to remove from the No Company Open window.
  4. Click Ok.

In all earlier versions of QuickBooks:

  1. Press F2 in QuickBooks to display the Product Information window.
  2. Press F3 to display the Tech Help window. 
  3. Select the Open File tab.   
  4. Open the QBWUSER.INI file by double-clicking on it.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of this file, you will see a list of all your files.
  6. Delete the line for the company files you wish to remove from the No Company Open window.
  7. Close the QBWUSER.INI file and click Yes when asked to save your changes.
    Note: You may need to close and reopen QuickBooks, or end the QBW32.exe process in Windows Task Manager, to see your changes take effect.
