Turning on Account Numbers in QuickBooks for MAC

When creating the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks for MAC for a new data file there are no account numbers associated with the default accounts and no option to enter an account number when creating a new account.

Solution Description
In QuickBooks 2010 and later:
  1. From the QuickBooks pull-down menu select Preferences.
  2. Then select Transactions.
  3. Check the box that reads Use account numbers.

In QuickBooks 2009 and earlier:

  1. From the Company menu, click on Company Settings….
  2. Select Transactions from the Show drop down window.
  3. Check the box that reads Use account numbers.
Notes:
  • QuickBooks will assign account numbers to the default accounts created by QuickBooks.
  • You will need to create and assign account numbers to all newly created accounts.
