Error 1601 when updating QuickBooks
What is happening

When updating QuickBooks, "Error 1601" occurs. The update does not complete.

Why is this happening

This error can be caused by:

  • A firewall blocking access to some QuickBooks components.
  • A damaged esgservices.dat file
  • A damaged .net component
Detailed Instructions

To edit firewall settings to allow QuickBooks traffic:

  1. Edit the firewall settings to grant access for the following QuickBooks components:
    • QBDBMgr.exe
    • QBDBMgrN.exe
    • QBCFMonitorService.exe
    • QBW32.exe
    • QBupdate.exe
  2. Edit the firewall settings to grant access to the following port:
    • QuickBooks 2008 and Enterprise Solutions 8.0: port 10180
    • QuickBooks 2007 and Enterprise Solutions 7.0: port 10172
    • QuickBooks 2006 and Enterprise Solutions 6.0: port 10160
Note: Because of the different firewall and security programs available, Intuit is unable to provide specific steps for editing firewall permissions. Please refer to the firewall's product documentation for instructions. Find help on modifying the settings on the Windows XP firewall.

If the error still occurs, continue with the following steps to replace a damaged esgservices.dat file:

  1. Restart the computer.

  4. Return to Performing a "clean install" or "clean uninstall" of QuickBooks for Windows and complete the remaining steps of the article to reinstall QuickBooks.
