Online Backup freezes or locks up when creating backup, or scheduled backup does not complete

What is happening
When creating a new or scheduled Online Backup, the system appears to freeze or lock up at X percent. . The backup does not complete.
Why is this happening

A major change to the data file structure has occured since the last successful backup was uploaded to the Online Backup servers.

QuickBooks Online Backup appends new data to the end of the last uploaded file. . Before beginning the upload of the new file, the software checks to see if any major changes have occured to the file since the last backup. . If it identifies a major structural change, Online Backup must completely reindex the company file, which takes time.

The structure change can occur if the Rebuild utility was run on the company file, or if hard drive maintenance was performed since the last backup was uploaded.

Detailed Instructions

Create a manual Online Backup, and allow Online Backup to reindex the file:

  1. From the QuickBooks menu, choose File > Save Copy or Backup...
  2. Select Backup Copy, and then click Next
  3. Select Online Backup, and then click Next
  4. Click Start Backup, and allow the software to complete.
Note: Online Backup may take up to several hours to reindex the company file, depending on the file size. . Scheduled Online Backups will complete correctly once the reindex is complete.
