Error: "Backup ran out of time..." creating an Online Backup

What is happening

When creating an Online Backup (scheduled or manual), the following error is displayed:

Error: "Backup ran out of time..."

Why is this happening

This error can occur for one of the following reasons:

  1. One or more selected files has been compressed or compacted, using WinZip or another compression application.
  2. The selected file has recently been rebuilt due to software upgrade or other means.
  3. The selected file is being automatically compressed by the original application when it reaches a certain size, depending on the type of file selected.
  4. The selected file of files were not given enough time to complete.

When new data is added to a file, the software application usually places the new data at the end of the file. . When the file is compressed, compacted or rebuilt, the file structure is distinctly modified. . Online Backup expects the changes/additions to be stored at the end of the file and when the application identifies that the file has been drastically modified during the compression process, it must re-scan the file byte-by-byte instead of only looking for changes appended to the end of the file.

This byte-by-byte scan can take some time depending on the nature of the changes and the size of the file, and is most commonly seen with database applications such as Microsoft Outlook(R), QuickBooks, Quicken, Microsoft Access(R), etc.

Detailed Instructions

To resolve this error, create a manual Online Backup and allow the application sufficient time to re-scan the file. . A manual backup will override the scheduler and allow Online Backup to run until it completes the backup.

Creating a manual Online Backup:

  1. Open the QuickBooks company file you want to back up.
  2. From the QuickBooks file menu, choose Save Copy or Backup..., select Backup Copy, and then click Next
  3. Select Online Backup and click Next
  4. Follow the onscreen prompts.

If this solution does not resolve the issue, review other available Intuit support options for additional guidance.
