Incorrect license or product number message during installation

When you try to enter the license and product numbers while installing QuickBooks, you see the following message:
You have entered incorrect license/product numbers. Please check the numbers carefully.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Make sure that the numbers being entered are correct

  • Locate the license and product numbers on the product casing, in the Email sent after an online or telephone order or by using the License Look Up Tool to ensure the numbers are correct.
  • ProAdvisors: License numbers are available at the ProAdvisor member site software and downloads page.
  • If you received QuickBooks in the mail, and you are installing with the codes on a shipping order you received with QuickBooks, the codes provided may be incorrect.

If the error still occurs after checking these numbers, proceed to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Choose "Yes to All" on Overwrite Protection message

When installing QuickBooks, you may receive the message "Overwrite Protection: The following file is already on your computer. Do you wish to overwrite this file?" You need to choose "Yes to all" on this message. This will NOT uninstall any previous versions of QuickBooks on your system. This only overwrites the temporary installation files from a previous QuickBooks installation. These files are only needed to install QuickBooks, and not used after QuickBooks has been installed.

Please follow the appropriate steps, depending on whether you are installing from a CD or from a Download.

Installing QuickBooks from a CD:

  1. Install QuickBooks from the CD.
    • See the section Installing QuickBooks 2013 or later if installing that version.
    • Important: If you receive the message "Overwrite Protection: The following file is already on the computer... Do you wish to overwrite this file?", click "Yes to All.". These files are stored in the Temp directory and can be overwritten without damaging any other programs on the computer.
  1. Make sure installation wizard is for the correct year and version. For example, the 2014 version of QuickBooks will not accept the license or product number intended for a different year install.
  2. If the issue persists after attempting to install from a CD, try installing the program from a download.

Installing QuickBooks from a Download:

  1. Download QuickBooks from the QuickBooks support website.
  2. Install QuickBooks from the download.
    • See the section Installing QuickBooks 2013 or later if installing that version.
    • Important: If you receive the message "Overwrite Protection: The following file is already on the computer... Do you wish to overwrite this file?", click "Yes to All.". These files are in the Temp directory and can be overwritten without damaging any other programs on the computer.
  3. Make sure installation wizard is for the correct year and version. For example, the 2014 version of QuickBooks will not accept the license or product number intended for a different year install.

If the wrong product version shows when installing from a CD or download, take the following steps:

  1. Close out the QuickBooks installation window.
  2. Locate the blue and gray icon for the QuickBooks installer on the desktop.
  3. Double click the icon to start the installation.
  4. When the installer extracts the files, click Yes to All when prompted to overwrite the existing files
    • Failure to do so may launch the wrong installer.

Solution 3: Other items to check

  • Try entering the license and product numbers using the number keys at the top of the keyboard, instead of the number pad or an external device.
  • Check the date and time settings are correct in Windows.
  • Close all QuickBooks processes in the task manager, then start the installation again.
    • See the following section entitled "Close all QuickBooks versions and processes" for the steps to do this.
  • The computer must meet the minimum system requirements and be configured correctly to install QuickBooks.
    • To check if this is the case and make changes if necessary, see the System requirements and installation instructions for your version in the article Prepare to install QuickBooks .
  • You should have Admin level user permissions in Windows to install QuickBooks. If this is not the case, try logging in as a different user.
  • QuickBooks requires the the Windows Regional Settings be set to  English (United States).
  • Run the Component repair tool to fix problems with third party components required by QuickBooks.
