Some accounts show zero balances, but should have balances, in Intuit Statement Writer (ISW)

Some accounts are showing balances with the amount of 0.00 in Intuit Statement Writer (ISW), although QuickBooks reports show a balance for these accounts.
 
When clicking Zoom into QuickBooks nothing happens or an Unhandled Exception error is displayed.
 
Why this is happening

This can be caused by either of 2 things:

  • There is a preference in QuickBooks that conflicts with sending data to Intuit Statement Writer.
  • There is an invalid character in the account name.
How to fix it
Solution 1: Change the Preference in QuickBooks
  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. On the left side of the preferences window, select Accounting.
  3. Click on the Company Preferences tab.
  4. Remove the checkmark in the "Show lowest subaccount only" preference.
  5. Click OK.

Solution 2: Remove any special characters from the account name by editing the account in QuickBooks

  1. From the Lists menu, select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Scroll through the Chart of Accounts looking for any special Characters
    • NOTE:  Most special characters (&, $, /, etc.) are not invalid.  You would be looking for any character that you cannot normally make with a standard keyboard .
  3. Right click on the account in question and select Edit account.
  4. Remove the special character from the Name field.
  5. Click OK.
The amounts should now flow to the Intuit Statement Writer.
