Fix error -6000 -80 with the QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks File Doctor is a what you need if you can't open your company file, most 6000 series errors (such as 6129, 613, 6000 83, etc), an H202 error, or other networking errors regarding multi-user setup.

For QuickBooks 2014 R5 and above, you may be prompted to run the internal (built-in) version of File Doctor. If so, please see the (Built-in) File Doctor for QuickBooks 2014 R5 and above article for more information.

QuickBooks File Doctor will:

  • Fix the problems it can.
  • Point you to information you need to fix the problem yourself.
  • If you need to call Support, give you information about your file that our support team can use to help you. 

How to use the File Doctor
  1. Download File Doctor to your Desktop then run the qbfd.exe file to install the tool. Important: If you already have an older version of File Doctor on your computer, you will want to download and install the latest version to take advantage of all the updates.
  2. After the installation is complete, double-click File Doctor icon on your desktop.
    • You may see a message that it needs to be elevated with administrator rights (this is normal and is required). Click Yes
    • If you do not see the File Doctor open, check your bottom Windows taskbar and look for the green wrench icon.
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • Both file damage and network connectivity.  Choose this option if you suspect your company file has data damage or you see a 6000 series error when you try to open your file.
    • Network connectivity only. Choose this option if you using QuickBooks in a multi-user setup and see an H202 error when opening your company file.
  4. You may be prompted with:
    • Enter your Admin password to the company file. Enter the admin password and click Next.
    • Share your company file folder. Click Yes if you are on the server hosting the QuickBooks file. If you are on a computer that is not hosting your company file, click No.
Review your results

Once the diagnosis is complete, you may see the following results: Important: Regardless of the results below, it is recommended to first try opening your file after running the File Doctor as it may have fixed the issue. If you run into problems, then check the following results for more information.

  • File diagnosis (data damage) results:
    • We're sorry, we couldn't find anything wrong with your file. This means there is nothing wrong that is detectable by the File Doctor. Try opening your file again or restore a backup if you have further problems.
    • We're sorry, your company file can't be repaired (With Auto Data Recovery). Click Restore my file from this backup which will restore your file from the last time an automatic backup was created (ADR). You may need to re-enter transactions since the last backup.
    • Repair Complete. File Doctor has successfully repaired your company file. Click Open New File (which is your old file, repaired) to open your file.
    • Upload your file to Data Services. If you have a support plan with Intuit, you'll see this option if you need more help.
  • Network diagnosis results:
    • Folder containing company file is not shared. If you are seeing this on a computer that is not the server hosting your company file, ignore this message. If you are on the server, see this article for more information.
    • Hosting mode is offIf you are seeing this on a computer that is not the server hosting your company file, ignore this message. If you are on the server, see this article for more information.
    • QBCFMonitorService is not runningIf you are seeing this on a computer that is not the server hosting your company file, ignore this message. If you are on the server, see this article for more information.
    • QBDBMgrN is not runningIf you are seeing this on a computer that is not the server hosting your company file, ignore this message. If you are on the server, see this article for more information.
    • YOUR ANTIVIRUS is active and may be blocking QuickBooks- Sometimes 3rd party antivirus programs can interfere with QuickBooks. It is recommended after running File Doctor you try opening your file again and if you run into problems, look into configuring your antivirus program to work wtih QuickBooks.

File Doctor Requirements
  • File and data repair. QuickBooks does not need to be installed on your computer.
  • Network diagnosis and repair. QuickBooks must be installed on the computer running File Doctor.
  • Multiuser diagnosis and repair. QuickBooks Hosting must be turned on.
  • The QBFD Tool supports: Win 8, Win 7, Win Vista, Win XP SP3, Server 2003-2012
  • If .NET frame work 2.0 is not installed on your system, QBFD will install it along with the diagnostic tool.
File Doctor limitations
  • You must be connected to the internet to upload the file for manual repair.
  • For data damage issues only, only run the QuickBooks File Doctor if you cannot open the file. If you can open the file and work inside it, do not run QuickBooks File Dr.
  • Your company file must be smaller than 2 GB to upload through this tool.
  • You can resume the download while the tool is still open. However, if the tool is closed, the upload will start again.
  • You must be logged in as Administrator to run network diagnosis. QuickBooks must also be in hosting mode.
  • If Windows User Account Control is turned ON, the tool will be re-launched with elevated administrator privileges.
  • Network Diagnose and Repair functionality may not work properly if multiple QuickBooks versions are installed on your computer. Currently, network fixes only work on the latest version of QuickBooks you have installed that is the actual program, not the Database Manager only install.
  • The File Doctor works on .qbw or .qba files only. (Learn more about file extensions.)
  • File repair and Network diagnosis is on by default.
  • Use the Advanced Settings button to run file only or network only diagnostics.
