Repair or reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework (Errors: 1603, 1903, 1722, 1904)

The Microsoft .NET Framework is a Microsoft component used by programs such as QuickBooks to integrate with Web applications. For more information, see Microsoft's .NET Framework Overview.

This article provides step-by-step instructions to repair or reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework error messages including: 1603, 1904, 1935, and 1722.

Detailed Instructions

Important: These troubleshooting steps are for the Windows operating system, which is not an Intuit product. The steps can become complex if errors occur while repairing or uninstalling .NET Framework. If you are not comfortable doing these steps on your own, Intuit recommends you consult with your computer's manufacturer or other computer professional.

In many cases, the QBInstallTool can fix your issue. Please try Solution 1 first. If Solution 1 does not solve your issue, then proceed to Solution 2.

Solution 1: Download and run the QuickBooksInstallDiagnosticTool.exe file

The QBInstall tool will attempt to correct problems with Microsoft Components which can cause unexpected errors while installing QuickBooks.

Download the QuickBooksInstallDiagnosticTool.exe if you are having problems installing QuickBooks. Note: If QuickBooks is already installed and isn't functioning properly, run the QuickBooks Component Repair Tool.
Save the file to your desktop.
Double-click the file to run the tool.
- If any errors were detected that would cause the installation to fail, the QBInstall tool will automatically run the steps to correct the problem. Note: A reboot may be required.
- If the tool says "No Errors Detected", you can run the QuickBooks Component Repair Tool which will automatically troubleshoot and repair Microsoft components needed for QuickBooks to function properly.

If your are still experiencing problems, try performing a Windows Update to install missing updates pertaining to .NET Framework, MSXML, and C++. Important: If you encounter any errors performing a Windows Update, contact a qualified IT professional or Microsoft.

Solution 2: If you are an IT professional or similarly advanced Windows expert and prefer to manually resolve this issue.

QuickBooks 2013 and 2012 or Enterprise Solutions 13.0 and 12.0

Windows 8

You must make sure that .NET Framework 4.5 is enabled in the Turn Windows features on or off feature in Windows 8.

Hover the mouse in the upper or lower right-hand corner and select Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click Programs and Features in the list.
Select Turn Windows features on or off on the left.
Verify .NET Framework 4.5 is enabled in Turns Windows Features On or Off
Ensure Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5 is enabled; blue box or a checkmark is OK.
1. If the box for .NET Framework is not enabled (not filled in or checked), enable it by clicking the box (it will turn blue), then reboot the computer. Note: You do not have to have a checkmark in the box, if the box is filled in, that means it is enabled.
2. If the box is already checked or enabled, you can try repairing Microsoft .Net 4.5 by clearing the box, rebooting and re-nabling the box and rebooting.
3. If the box is blank or you get an error activating a component, please see the Windows features on or off box is blank article.
Verify .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is enabled in Turns Windows Features On or Off
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is used by this version of QuickBooks and is integrated with the Windows 7/Windows Vista operating system which cannot be repaired or installed independently.

You must make sure that .NET Framework 3.5.1 (2.0 and 3.0 if Windows Vista) is enabled in the Turn Windows Features On or Off feature in Windows 7/Windows Vista.

If your are still experiencing problems, try performing a Windows Update to install missing updates pertaining to .NET Framework, MSXML, and C++. Important: If you encounter any errors performing a Windows Update, contact a qualified IT professional or Microsoft.

Windows 7 or Vista

Verify .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is enabled in Turns Windows Features On or Off
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is used by this version of QuickBooks and is integrated with the Windows 7/Windows Vista operating system which cannot be repaired or installed independently.

You must make sure that .NET Framework 3.5.1 (2.0 and 3.0 if Windows Vista) is enabled in the Turn Windows Features On or Off feature in Windows 7/Windows Vista.
1. Open the Start menu and click Computer.
2. Click Uninstall or Change a Program in the upper blue bar.
3. Click Turn Windows Features On or Off over on the left.
4. Ensure Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 is enabled; blue box or a checkmark is OK.
5. If the box for .NET Framework is not enabled (not filled in or checked), enable it by clicking the box (it will turn blue), then reboot the computer. Note: You do not have to have a checkmark in the box, if the box is filled in or has a blue square which means it is enabled.
  - If the box is already checked or enabled, you can try repairing Microsoft .Net 3.5 by clearing the box, rebooting and re-enabling the box and rebooting.
  - If the box is blank or you get an error activating a component, please see the Windows features on or off box is blank article.
Close all open applications and See if .NET Framework 4.0 or 4.5 is already installed:
1. Click the Start menu and select Control Panel.
2. Double-click Programs and Features:
  - If Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5) appears in the list, proceed to Step 3 to repair it.
  - If Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5) is not in the list, proceed to Step 5 to install it.
Repair .NET Framework 4.0 or 4.5:
1. In the Programs and Features window, select Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5) and click Uninstall/Change.
2. Select Repair and click Next.
3. Follow instructions to repair the application. Make sure to reboot your computer after repairing .NET framework.
  - If repair completes successfully, open QuickBooks or try to install the program again.
  - If an error occurs during repair or the repair does not fix the issue, proceed with Step 4 to uninstall .NET Framework.
Uninstall .NET Framework 4.0 and 4.5:
1. Repeat the above steps to get back into the Programs & Features window.
2. Double click on Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5).
3. Select Uninstall and click Next.
4. Follow instructions to uninstall the application, and then proceed with Step 5 below to reinstall it. Make sure to reboot your computer after uninstalling .NET framework.
5. Important: If you encounter any errors while uninstalling .NET Framework, please contact a qualified IT professional or Microsoft as this is a Microsoft component that interacts with the operating system, not just QuickBooks.
Install .NET Framework 4.5 (4.0 Client and Extended built in):
1. From Microsoft's web site download .NET Framework 4.5 (.NET Framework 4.5 is a combination of the .NET Framework 4.0 Client and Extended).
2. Save the file to your desktop, then double-click the dotNetFx45_Full_setup.exe file and follow the instructions on the screen to install.
3. Reboot after installation of .NET Framework 4.5.
4. If you encounter any errors while installing .NET Framework, please contact a qualified IT professional or Microsoft.
Reboot your system and then open QuickBooks to ensure it is working properly.

Windows XP

Close all open applications and See if .NET Framework is already installed:

  - If Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5) is not in the list, proceed to Step 4 to install it.

1. In the Add/Remove Programs window, select Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or 4.5) and click Uninstall/Change.
2. Select Repair and click Next.

QuickBooks 2011 and 2010 or Enterprise Solutions 11.0 and 10.0

Windows 7 or Vista

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 is used by this version of QuickBooks and is integrated with the Windows Vista/Windows 7 operating system which cannot be repaired or installed independently.

You must make sure that .NET Framework 3.5.1 (2.0 and 3.0 if Windows Vista) is enabled in the Turn Windows Features On or Off feature in Windows Vista/Windows 7.

Open the Start menu and click Computer.
Click Uninstall or Change a Program in the upper blue bar.
Click Turn Windows Features On or Off over on the left.
Make sure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 (2.0 and 3.0 if Windows Vista) is enabled (blue box or a checkmark is OK).
1. If the box for Microsoft .NET Framework is not enabled (not checked), enable it by clicking the box (it will turn blue), then reboot the computer. Note: You do not have to have a checkmark in the box, if the box is highlighted in blue, that means it is enabled.

  2. Right-click the Windows Logo button and choose Explore.
  3. Browse to D:\ThirdParty\DotNET35, where D: is your CD drive letter.
  4. Double-click dotnetfx35setup.exe, and follow instructions to install the software.
1. From Microsoft's web site download .NET Framework for your version of Windows and read the instructions to download and install the program.
2. Important: If you encounter any errors while installing .NET Framework, please contact a qualified IT professional or Microsoft.
Reboot your system and then open QuickBooks to ensure it is working properly.

QuickBooks 2009 and 2008 or Enterprise Solutions 9.0 and 8.0

Windows Vista

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 is used by this version of QuickBooks and is integrated with the Windows Vista operating system which cannot be repaired or installed independently.

You must make sure that .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 is enabled in the Turn Windows Features On or Off feature in Windows Vista.

Open the Start menu and click Computer.
Click Uninstall or Change a Program in the upper blue bar.
Click Turn Windows Features On or Off over on the left.
Make sure Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 is enabled (blue box or a checkmark is OK).

Reboot your system and then open QuickBooks to ensure it is working properly.

QuickBooks 2007 or Enterprise Solutions 7.0

Windows Vista

Close all open applications.
Open the list of currently installed programs:
1. Click the Windows Logo button.
2. Enter control in the Start Search field, and then press Enter. The Control Panel window opens.
3. Double-click Programs and Features.
Search the list of currently installed programs for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1:
- If the program appears in the list, repair it:
  1. Insert the QuickBooks CD in your CD drive. If the QuickBooks installation window opens, close it.
  2. Click the Windows Start button and select Run.
  3. Enter (or copy and paste) the following command in the Open field. (D: is your CD drive letter):
    D:\ThirdParty\DotNET11\dotnetfx.exe" /Q /t:%temp% /c:"msiexec.exe /qb /fvaum %temp%\netfx.msi
  4. Click OK. If an error message occurs, verify that you entered the command exactly as it appears above.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.
- If the program does not appear on the list, install it:
  1. Insert the QuickBooks CD in your CD drive. If the QuickBooks installation window opens, close it.
  2. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore.
  3. Browse to D:\ThirdParty\DotNET11, where D: is your CD drive letter.
  4. Double-click dotnetfx.exe, and follow the prompts to install the software.

Note: If your QuickBooks CD is not available, you can download and install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 from the Microsoft Web site.

Windows XP

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Close all open applications.
Open the list of currently installed programs:
1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel (or Settings > Control Panel).
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Search the list of currently installed programs for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1:
- If the program appears in the list, repair it:
  1. Insert the QuickBooks CD in your CD drive. If the QuickBooks installation window opens, close it.
  2. Click the Windows Start button and select Run.
  3. Enter (or copy and paste) the following command in the Open field. (D: is your CD drive letter):
    D:\ThirdParty\DotNET11\dotnetfx.exe" /Q /t:%temp% /c:"msiexec.exe /qb /fvaum %temp%\netfx.msi
  4. Click OK. If an error message occurs, verify that you entered the command exactly as it appears above.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.
- If the program does not appear on the list, install it:

Note: If your QuickBooks CD is not available, you can download and install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 from the Microsoft Web site.

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Close all open applications.
Click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel (or Settings > Control Panel).
Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Search the list of currently installed programs for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0:
- If the program appears in the list, repair it:
  1. Select Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, and then click Change/Remove.
  2. Select Repair, and then click Next.
  3. When prompted, restart your computer.
- If the program does not appear in the list, install it:
  1. Insert the QuickBooks CD in your CD drive. If the QuickBooks installation window opens, close it.
  2. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore.
  3. Browse to D:\ThirdParty\DotNET20, where D: is your CD drive letter.
  4. Double-click dotnetfx20.exe, and follow the prompts to install the software.
