Windows XP and Vista firewall configuration
Overview

The Windows XP or the Windows Vista firewall, on either the Server or Client workstation, can block communication between workstations and the Point of Sale company data or to the Internet. In most cases, you will see a message from the firewall if this is the case. If Windows XP or Windows Vista firewall is blocking access, Point of Sale will alert you on startup and offer to automatically configure the firewall for you. If the request is declined, the Windows XP or Windows Vista firewall will have to be configured manually.

Detailed Instructions
When Point of Sale ports are blocked by Windows Firewall, the following processes may be interrupted:
  • Electronic Funds Transfer - used with Credit Card transactions
  • DataBase Server Manager operation
  • Intuit Entitlement Service - used to verify product licensing

Print out a listing of Point of Sale ports, files and their locations so it is available as you configure your firewall.

To allow access to these critical ports in Windows XP Firewall:

  1. Click the Microsoft Windows Start button and select Run. Enter control in the Open field and click OK.
  2. Open the Security Center and click on Windows Firewall to open the properties window.
  3. Click the Exceptions tab and select Add Port.
  4. Using the Port Descriptions above, enter the port description first, followed by the port number. (Select TCP or UDP for the type of port you are entering. If a port is both TCP and UDP you will have to enter the port twice, once for TCP and one for UDP).
  5. Add the remaining ports to the exception list using Step 4.
  6. When completed, click Apply and click OK.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Open Point of Sale and proceed with program activities.

To allow access to these critical ports in Windows Vista Firewall:

  2. Double-click on the Security Center and select the Windows Firewall to open the Properties window.
  3. Click Change Settings and click Continue in the User Account Control window.
  4. Select the Exceptions tab and click Add Port.
  5. Using Port Descriptions above, enter the port description first, followed by the port number. (Select TCP or UDP for the type of port you are entering. If a port is both TCP and UDP you will have to enter the port twice, once for TCP and one for UDP).
  6. Repeat step 4 until all the ports from the Port Listing have been added.
  7. When finished click Apply and click OK.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Open Point of Sale and proceed with program activities
